A Year in Review: Wonky Felt’s 1st Birthday

Hot Diggity Dog Diggity!

There are 261 working days in a year.

For Wonky Felt, that means 261 days of covering a hole in the carpet at work with handmade felt scenes.

And because it wouldn’t be interesting to cover it with the same thing every day, that also means 261 unique scenes, photos, and captions. …not including occasional bonus scenes for holidays.

Wonky Felt’s birthday was celebrated in July. Now that it’s been a whole year, it does make me wonder:  Just how long will this go on? Will Wonky Felt make it through another round of holidays on the floor hole? Will it last another whole year?

I didn’t really expect the hole on the floor to be there for this long. I mean, it is a gaping eyesore, after all, and the logical reaction is that it needs fixing. But there’s an interesting part to this story that explains WHY the hole as been there for so long. There is a much larger carpet replacement project planned for the entire building. So the maintenance folks must think that it really makes no sense to patch this piece, knowing that the whole floor will get replaced eventually. It could also be that with Wonky Felt scenes covering the hole for the majority of workday (8+ hours), maybe folks just don’t see it as an ugly spot anymore. And really, that was the whole point of Wonky Felt to begin with.

The Birthday gang’s all here!

I can say that, after an entire year, it is difficult to keep the momentum going and the ideas fresh. I went on vacation for a week, which also turned into a break from making, but I still felt the need to keep the floor hole covered. (I made sure to leave some scene pieces and characters while I was out.)  Coming up with a theme every week is a constant struggle. And yet, Wonky Felt persists! I still feel the need to keep that ugly floor hole covered and I probably won’t stop until it actually does get repaired.

In the meantime, here are my notes for keeping the fun going and ideas for what to do after the floor hole is repaired:

  • It may be time to bring back favorites! I do have some pieces that are labors of love and may need to make a comeback, likely with new storylines and accessories.
  • Thinking “outside the floor-hole”:  Mustard Dog has been itching to take his show on the road! Or maybe even other floors in the building! (You gotta start somewhere.)
  • It would be fun to include guest artists for a week (which would also double as giving me a break).

What other ideas do you have to keep Wonky Felt going? 🙂
